Go to and learn – Lee Brimlow has finished the overhaul!

January 22, 2008

Lee Brimlow has finished his overhaul of his Flash Tutorials website – www.gotoandlearn.com

There are now video tutorials on the site covering everything from Flash Video to AIR.

Lee has been incredibly generous with his knowledge over the years and also with the effort he has put into www.gotoandlearn.com

It was a resource I have used many times in the past, especially to further my knowledge of Flash Video.

Also don’t forget to check out Lee’s Flash Blog….as he is now working for Adobe, this comes straight from the horses mouth.

Go to and learn…..well, what are you waiting for?

Apple Pro Training Final Cut Pro and Motion, oh and a bit of Actionscript!

January 19, 2008

I have just started studying my new book – Final Cut Pro 6 – Professional Editing in Final Cut Studio 2 By Diana Weynand.

Have done the first three chapters and have found the book to be good so far.

I have finished the Apple Pro Training Series: Motion 3 book but need to go back throught it again as it got a bit tricky in some parts, especially when discussing working in 3D with cameras.

I am also studying Flash Actionscript which I have dabbled with on and off for years but never made the full effort to sit down and do some training on.

You can however, see the potential of Motion instantly once you have been through the book and I am looking forward to getting stuck into using the program once I have a bit of an idea about what I’m doing!

This training is made much easier now by the fact that I have two gigantic 24 inch Dell monitors hooked up to my Mac Pro.

It means I can park video tutorials on one screen and work along in the other, I also have far more screen real estate when working with programs like Final Cut and Motion.

Streaming The Men Of Iron.

January 8, 2008

I have been involved in the ‘sport’ of paintball as a player on and off for 20 years now, pretty much since it first started.

As an industry it has had its fair share of cowboys and people chasing the fast buck just like any other industry.

However, with the internet now almost over a decade old in terms of mass use, some paintball brands are finally recognising that brand awareness and a good website will get them a long way.

With this in mind, I came across the new Team Ironmen website which I feel encapsulates exactly what the team stand for.

It is done in Flash and incorporates a lot of Flash Video, not only in the introduction, but you can view video of player profiles and watch the team in action.

With a web presence like this and the fact the Ironmen have just won the 2007 Paintball World Cup, it will be no wonder sponsors will be more than happy to part with the cash to help the team out.

Oi – Av A Word…

January 6, 2008

I know this was blogged to death at the time, but I came across it again the other day.

I still think it’s superb!

Glue’s viral Flash Video campaign for the Mini Cooper launch in 2006.

Without doubt one of the most ingenious uses of Flash Video so far on the net.

Online Storage and Sharing – Beware!

January 3, 2008

I first began working on my own projects using Flash Video in 2004.

It soon became apparent that I would need a facility to host the video files while allowing them to be shared in order for the Flash Video player to target and play them.

After much searching I found a company based in the USA in San Diego called Streamload.

They offered exactly what I required, they even had a tracking facility where you could view how much of the file had been streamed and various stats about who had requested the file.

They had great reviews and what appeared to be a growing community of users and best of all the pricing was good.

My Flash Video samples worked flawlessly and if ever there was a problem the Streamload Customer Service would usually respond to the query within 24 hour and the problem would be resolved.

As time went by Streamload announced they were going to rollout a new and improved version of Streamload called Mediamax which would be all singing and all dancing.

They also rebranded the company to Mediamax in order to add extra fanfair to the launch of the product.

Mediamax was rolled out and customers didn’t get a choice, the files they had on the Streamload system were ported across to the Mediamax system….and all hell broke loose.

It was apparent from the off that Mediamax didn’t work properly, files failed to stream, accounts could not be accessed and the whole situation began to take on that train wreck feel.

Mediamax still advertised and worst of all, still took customers money.

Their customer service disappeared, the Mediamax blog comments were disabled due to the amount of abuse the company were getting, and any form of contact was impossible.

The other problem was they held your credit card details on your account, but you had no way to remove them.

As I was using this company in both a personal and professional capacity (I had mp3 and video files hosted with them for the company I work for.) I was getting more and more annoyed and set out to get a refund of all monies paid from June 06 to August 07 which I successfully did after threatening legal action.

This left me with a situation, I had been able to retrieve files that had not been lost by Mediamax but I still needed someone to host them.

After more research I found a start up company called Omnidrive who appeared to be destined for great things.

I bought in, and moved both personal and professional files to the company.

There were some glitches but I was assured and fully expected them to be ironed out.

How wrong I was.

I logged on to Omnidrive this morning and on the new navigation layout I spotted a FORUM button.

I clicked on it and was immediately horrified to see posts demanding refunds.

Here we go again I thought, and having read some of the posts it would appear Omnidrive are also heading for the toilet.

So here is my tale of woe regarding online storage and sharing companies, I guess I will be looking for another one shortly.

Mediamax had no qualms about effectively stealing their customers money, not only that, but they still have the audacity to advertise the service as working.

They also appear to have rebranded and set up again as a company called Nirvanix, although they deny it, you only have to look at the addresses of both ‘businesses’ to see it doesn’t take an idiot to figure it out – they are on the same street as each other!

As for Omnidrive, well it doesn’t look good and I will be keeping a close eye on them.

More Omnidrive woe!

So if you know of any online hosting companies that arn’t going to loose my files and steal my money, please let me know!

Flu, Gigs and Streaming Media!

December 14, 2007

Had the dreaded flu for the entire week hence the lack of postings this week.

The Shed Seven gig last Saturday was excellent and the whole crowd were well up for it.

They played all their hits and finished with a stunning version of Going For Gold.

One of the stand out moments was a brilliant Parallel Lines which made the hairs on the back of my neck stand up!

Shed Seven Ticket Leeds University 08 - 12 -07.

Back in the land of the living, one of the websites I always have an eye on regarding the use of web video is www.streamingmedia.com.

Whilst checking the website this morning I noticed they put up digital versions of the bi-monthly magazine they produce – Streaming Media Magazine.

You can read the magazine in flash page turn environment within your browser.

They have featured articles from the likes of Lisa Larson, who is a flash video expert and has recently published the book – Flash Video for Professionals.

The September / October edition of Streaming Media Magazine can be found here.

You will need flash player installed.

Adobe’s New Website.

December 8, 2007

Abode unvieled their new website the other day, breaking with the old centre aligned website and going to a left aligned website and a right sided search feature.

The website is far more in your face that the old design and and still easy to navigate around.

I like it, I think they need to brave and start delivering a more bandwidth intensive webiste in order to inspire people with the products they sell.

While on the subject of inspiration I am currently working my way through four new study books -

Apple Pro Training Series: Motion 3.
Flash Video for Professionals: Expert Techniques for Integrating Video on the Web.
Creating Flash Advertising: From Concept to Tracking – Microsites, Video Ads and More.
Hands-On Guide to Flash Video: Web Video and Flash Media Server.

I have about another four chapters to do on the Motion training and have just finished the Hands-On Guide to Flash Video: Web Video and Flash Media Server.

It’s a long haul but it will be worth it in the end!

Adobe Flash - Flash Video and Apple Motion 3 Study Materials.

However, I will be taking the night off tonight to go see the re-formed Shed Seven at Leeds University which I am very much looking forward to!

We Have Lift Off…

December 6, 2007

Well I have finally decided to take the plunge and start a blog.

I jumped out of bed this morning full of the joys of spring and after some deliberation I decided I should make the effort

I am a professional web designer / developer with a passion for Flash Video, Flash Media Server, Flash and Graphic Design.

I play tournament paintball for a team called Fusion based in York at the Yorkshire Paintball Center.

I love music.
